Water does not merge?

Wa huwal-lazi marajal-bahraini haza ‘azbun furatuw wahaza milhun ujaj(un) wa ja’ala bainahuma barzakhaw wa hijram mahjura(n).

He is the One who let free the two bodies of flowing water; one is fresh and palatable, while the other is salty and undrinkable. And He separated them with a formidable, inviolable barrier (evaporation). [Al-Furqan 25:53]

Professional diver/photographer Anatoly Beloshchin took these breathtaking photos in the cave in Cenote Angelita, Mexico. On your way down you can see spectacular layers of rocks formed during the last ice age. Here is his description of this bizarre and enchanting place:
“We are 30 meters deep, fresh water, then 60 meters deep – salty water and under me I see a river, island and fallen leaves… Actually, the river, which you can see, is a layer of hydrogen sulphide.”

Fresh water is lighter than salt water. Therefore, fresh water "floats" on top of salt water. The underground boundary that separates the fresh water layer from the salt water is not a sharp boundary line. In reality, this boundary is a transition zone of brackish water (fresh/salt mixture). Fresh water has a density of 1.0 while salt water has a density of 1.025. From this, you can see that salt water is slightly heavier than fresh water.
